ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER F

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV)

What do you expect of God?

Certainly we don’t expect an all-powerful God to shroud us in fear. I like the way the Contemporary English Version of this verse says it: God’s Spirit doesn’t make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control. We anticipate God’s Spirit to be present and to empower us, to fill us with love, and to help us live respecting and honoring our God.

Large segments of our society wallow in fear. Businesses flourish by convincing us that their product will save us from some hazard that we should fear. Television ads use scare tactics.

The award-winning movie, Bowling for Columbine, did a masterful job of painting a picture of fear at work in our society.

This F verse is important in our Bible verse arsenal because of (more…)

Must we Yield to the Force of Inappropriate Touch?

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

MUST WE YIELD TO THE FORCE OF INAPPROPRIATE TOUCH?

Have We Lost Our Common Sense?

SCRIPTURE: Galatians 3:11     Clearly no one is justified before God by the law because, “The righteous will live by faith.”  (NI)

REFLECTION: Our world has been turned upside down. Signs should be posted.

AFFECTION BANNED:

YIELD TO THE FORCE

OF INAPPROPRIATE TOUCH

That is, do not hug children. Any physical show of affection is risky and can result in child abuse charges. You must bear the consequences of the actions of child molesters.

This paranoia is fed by (more…)

Preparing for a First Date with Carmena

PREPARING FOR THAT FIRST DATE WITH CARMENA

Cochran Cornell the Cantankerous Cockroach

Cochran peeked in the mirror. His wings shimmered, having just been washed in the late evening rainfall.

Remember me? I’m Cochran, the Cantankerous Cockroach. Actually, I’m Carolyn’s alter ego.And I’m preparing for my first date with Carmena.

If you can recall your first date with a dream of a woman, you will understand how nervous I am. And of course, as I find myself scittering by a mirror, I cannot help but stop (more…)

We’re Adopting a Baby! Part 4

WE’RE ADOPTING A BABY! Part 4

Conclusion

Our own adoption home-study had proven a difficult experience for me. My caseworker didn’t like me very much. I believe she felt threatened by the fact that I was doing adoption home-studies myself, in spite of the fact that she had forty years of experience to my being a newbie. The only saving grace was that she adored Monte. He could, and did, say things that might be prejudicial against our acceptance, with (more…)

Before I accepted my job as home-study caseworker for adoptive families while I myself was in the adoption process, I stipulated two things to my boss, Naomi.

First, I gave my notice. Unlike giving biological birth, adoptive parents have no set (more…)

When I accepted my job, interviewing prospective adoptive couples, I wondered what I would do—how I would feel—when confronted by a couple who might not make the best of parents. This was an experience fate didn’t delay. The case history of the first couple I interviewed was strangely unnerving. All indications pointed to the fact that this couple was unqualified to have a child placed in their care, according to the middle class yardstick by which (more…)

WE’RE ADOPTING A BABY! Part 1

     We’re adopting a baby!

Oh, it’s not official yet—in fact, we have not even been approved yet. We only just sent in our application. However, we feel confident that we will be found acceptable as adoptive parents. Yet—there is always doubt, a doubt that will (more…)

Honey went home—She’s romping in animal heaven

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

HONEY WENT HOME

She’s romping about animal heaven

It looked good for Honey’s recovery when I posted Honey’s Coming Home! Our cat must recuperate. What happened a few days later was surprising. Honey’s story continues below.

Honey lay on the table in the examination room at Loyalhanna Veterinary Clinic, Inc. I sat and observed her closely, looking to see if her heart was demonstrating the same rapid and hard rhythm I had seen during the previous evening.

At about 8:45 a. m. Saturday morning I’d called the vet’s office to share my concerns. Following her visit to the clinic on August 20, when she’d been diagnosed with two fractures on the top of her leg near her hip bone, she’d done fine. She didn’t like being confined, but it was a minor price to pay for her recuperation time. She ate, slept, purred and accepted her medication: prednisolone.

On Thursday, the 27th, I cut her medication in half. The morning dose went fine, but she fought the evening dose. Not just fought it. She (more…)

Why women stay in abusive relationships: Is this the right question?

CAROLYN’S COMPOSTITIONS

WHY WOMEN STAY IN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS:

IS THIS THE RIGHT QUESTION?

Why would a woman who’s been savagely beaten by her boyfriend run right back into his arms?

That was the question people asked when singer Rihanna, who not only didn’t press charges after her boyfriend (singer Chris Brown) allegedly assaulted her in February, but may have even reconciled with him.

It’s a question asked repeatedly by persons familiar with any abuse situation where the victim returns to a dangerous situation. And it’s a hard situation for most people to understand.

Most often, the abused woman’s self-esteem is (more…)
