WP DAILY PROMPT JULY 19, 2013:

FLY ON THE WALL—

MY PARENTS MEET AND MARRY

The wordPress daily prompt for July 19, 2013, was If you could be a “fly on the wall” anywhere and at any time in history, where and when would you choose?

~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you know the story of your parent’s meeting, dating, and marriage?
I don’t.
My family of origin wasn’t of the story-telling ilk. Thus, I grew up knowing nothing about my family history and little about story-telling.
To complicate things my parents were divorced and my paternal ancestry was kept hidden except for the fact that my father was in the Navy.
Thus, this “fly on the wall” wish has several parts, which could be summarized that I would like to be a fly throughout their courtship and marriage:
  • to be present when they meet: How did they meet? It remains a mystery of which I am mighty curious.
  • to be present on their first date.
  • to be present when they agreed to be married
  • to attend their wedding
I can only assume that their wedding was quite simple. They were wed in Newport, Rhode Island, probably by the Navy chaplain. I doubt that any of my grandparents—maternal or paternal—were present since there was “bad blood” mixed into the situation.
I invite you to share the story of your parent’s meeting in the comment box below.
  2. My Mother was the assistant to my grandmother as she was very crippled with arthritis. Was never told of their first meeting so she married the son of her employer.
  3. Carolyn, your parents’ marriage sounds similar to mine. Even to the divorce when I was 3 yrs. I know few details. My father was born in Boston Mass. to Irish immigrant parents. His parents died when he was 10 yrs. He and his siblings were placed in an orphanage. How he ended up in SE Georgia, to marry my mother is still a mystery. He was 15 yrs older than mother and how two such diverse people could marry…???
    Its still a mystery, they’re dead and all who knew them at the time.
