CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

DARLENE

Today is Darlene’s birthday. In eight days it will be my birthday.

It’s the first birthday we’ve shared as sisters. We were birthed to each other on January 19 of this year 2011—she close to sixty, me close to seventy years old. My, the birthing was painful—such large babies were we!

Well, not so painful. Actually, it’s been a delight to grow to know her this year. Our first contact was made easy because of this blog, the New Hampshire open adoption records, and the fact that our mother had a unique maiden name.

So once again, for the last time this year, I will attempt poetry.

ITSA GIRL!

Itsa girl!   What a whirl!

Fifty-eight years in the makin’.

My what a birth

The greatest on earth

Ousted full-grown from the blog.

Now I’m the big sis

This point you can’t miss

Though not the organizer

I’m older, I’m wiser

Advice from this owl—dialogue.

You’re the little sis

This point you can’t miss.

That you are an angel

Is certainly a new angle.

Your discovery left me agog.

DARLENE

My new parents did name me Darlene

Not Delphine, Roedean, or Josephine.

Since she’s new to my life

We can now play the fife

She’s level-headed, not grenadine.
