THE GREAT BLUE NORTHER: 11-11-1911

Many people believe that the numerical calendar date can hold special significances, but based on past calendar dates such as October 10, 2010 and November 11, 2011 this is a myth. For numerical significanceof 11-11 click on 11-11-(20)11

Although most of the nothing significant happens, that wasn’t true on November 11, 1911.

On 11-11-11, one hundred years ago, weater in Midwest cities dropped sixty-seven degrees between early afternoon and midnight.

In Springfield, Missouri, it dropped from eighty degrees to thirteen degrees Fahrenheit.* By the morning of November 12, it had dropped even further, to nine degrees Fahrenheit.**

Notes of the weatherman read: Increasing S to SW winds shifting to the NW at 3:45 pm and attaining an ex.(extreme)velocity of 74 miles for one minute. Considerable damage done to buildings, wires, and trees. Many windows blown in and several people injured. Record high temp. occurred about 2 pm and low temp for this early in the month. Temp fell from 80 to 21 at 7 pm. Cold wave order received and given usual distribution. Hail, sleet, rain, and snow fell. First thunder 4:52 pm. Last 6:10 pm. Storms came from north.**

The cause? The Great Blue Norther’. It affected a large part of the Midwest.

A blue norther’, usually occurring in the autumn, is generally associated with a rapidly moving cold front that causes temperatures to drop quickly, and is often accompanied with precipitation and unsettled weather. These conditions are followed by a period of blue skies and cold temperatures.

Across the Mississippi River Valley the 11-11-11 Great Blue Norther’ cold front was preceded by severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. In Ohio, behind the front, there was a strong blizzard. In Oklahoma strong winds kicked up a dust storm.

After an F4 tornado in Wisconsin survivors worked through near zero visibility in blizzard conditions, trying to rescue trapped tornado victims.*

What can we expect on 11-11-11? It’s this year’s Veterans Day, also. Perhaps a miracle will happen—peace will come and we will produce no more veterans.

     We can only hope.
