PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL 2011: HOW MUCH MORE WINTER?

      Although I’m not there yet, I am registering the complaint I’m tired of it! Of course, I’m talking about the weather, and hearing from people who, unlike me, don’t have the luxury of enjoying the white wonderland from my living room or kitchen windows.

     Today is Groundhog Day, the appointed date for Punxsutawney Phil to tell us how much more winter we can expect to experience. So how about it, Phil?

     Oops! It’s only 7:15 a. m. People are just gathering in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to see Phil, whose prediction is scheduled at 7:30 a. m. I will return with his prediction, and post it. I don’t expect much—it’s dark and rainy. How can he see his shadow?

UPDATE: To the relief of the winter-weary, the world’s most famous groundhog predicted an early spring Wednesday.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged just after dawn on Groundhog Day to make his 125th annual weather forecast in front of a smaller-than-usual crowd who braved muddy, icy conditions to hear his handlers reveal that he had not seen his shadow.*

~~~~~~~~~~~~
     The results aren’t a surprise—at 7:30 a. m. it’s likely the sun isn’t risen yet, and without sunshine, no shadow. It’s 8:40 a. m. here in Laurel Mountain Borough, where the sun rises late due to the mountains. Is the sun shining in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania? If Phil were brought out later in the day, would he see his shadow?
