Csardas Dance Company to Perform in Ligonier, PA

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

CSARDAS DANCE COMPANY TO PERFORM

IN LIGONIER, PENNSYLVANIA

 Csárdás (chär-däsh) is rooted in the word Csárda, the Hungarian word for a village inn, pub or tavern—places where villagers often gathered to sing, dance and celebrate special occasions. The dances celebrated in the Csárda became known as Csárdás, or dances of the pub.

      With infectious exuberance emotions and traditions are personified and shared through dance in Hungarian villages. It’s within this tradition that Richard Graber founded the Csardas Dance Company in Cleveland, Ohio as a vehicle to promote and support the art of Hungarian dance. The Csárdás reveal the richness of the Hungarian culture through a broad range of dance dialects and styles.

     On March 12, 2011, the Csardas Dance Company will perform at 3:00 p. m. at the Ligonier Valley Theater in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

     The Bethlen Communities is sponsoring the event to celebrate (more…)

ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER Y

Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. (Titus 2:6)

This verse leads us to the larger passage of the letter of St. Paul to Titus:

1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2 that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. 6 Young men likewise exhort to be soberminded. 7 In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. (Titus 2:1-8, KJV)

The Rev. Manasseh Cutler Visits Peale’s Museum in Philadelphia

THE REV. MANASSEH CUTLER VISITS

PEALE’S MUSEUM IN PHILADELPHIA

     A Dr. Clarkson and The Rev. Manasseh Cutler, a key player in arranging the 1787 Scioto Land Grant in Southeast Ohio (a sub-grant of the Ohio Land Grant), later visited a museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

     The museum, started as a private enterprise by Charles Wilson Peale, opened in 1784 at his residence on the corner of Third and Lombard Streets. During The Rev. Cutler’s visit, Mr. Peale demonstrated that he had a sense of humor. We have the following story because The Rev. Cutler was diligent in keeping a journal.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Immediately after dinner we called on Mr. Peale to see his collections of paintings and natural curiosities. We were conducted into a room by a boy, who told us Mr. Peale would wait on us in a minute or two. He desired us, however, to walk into the room where the curiosities were, and showed us a (more…)
TO RECLAIM A FAMILY FARM—OR NOT
     After moving to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, I learned that one branch of my ancestors were from Hempfield Township, and that one of their sons, Michael Rugh (married Elizabeth Raymer/Reamer) and moved to Blacklick Township in Indiana County (same state) (see link in ADDITIONAL READING below: You Mean This New Englander is a Westsylvanian?).
     It wasn’t long before I arranged, with the current owners, to visit the farm where Michael and Elizabeth were raising their eight children.
     The current day farm is merely a piece of the original property. It was obvious that modernization had taken hold. As I stood in the front yard, overlooking Rte. 119, with the cars zipping by, I could see the towers of the (more…)
What Vitamins & Medications Do You Unknowingly Take?
CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS
WHAT VITAMINS & MEDICATIONS
DO YOU UNKNOWINGLY TAKE?
     About two out of five adolescents have tooth streaking or spottiness because of too much fluoride, a surprising government study found recently. In some extreme cases, teeth can even be pitted by the mineral — though many cases are so mild that only dentists notice it…(the condition) fluorosis—is unexpectedly common in children twelve to fifteen years old. And it appears to have become much more common since the 1980s… The problem is generally considered cosmetic.*
     Only cosmetic? The article later points out that A scientific report five years ago said people who consume a lifetime of too much fluoride — an amount over EPA’s limit of 4 milligrams — can develop crippling bone abnormalities and brittleness.
     Although I don’t take fluoride supplements, as many people do—nor do I use store-bought toothpaste , as most people do, I’ve often wondered just how much fluoride has been added to my diet through the use of store-bought foods. I also wonder how much unknown vitamins, minerals and medications I’m taking simply by eating these store-bought foods and drinking from the community water supply.
     Peruse the labels of items you purchase from the grocery shelves and you will notice (more…)
SCENE: Victoria and Losen are conversing in the grocery store in the aisle where greeting cards are sold.
Victoria: Hello, Losen! Nice to see you out on this nice day. The winter’s been so cold and snowy I haven’t been out much. Oh, are you looking for a Valentine card? I’m looking for just the right one for a neighbor whose husband just died.
Losen: Ugh! Valentine’s Day is here. What hogwash.
Victoria: Er. What caused this outburst? I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day…why, as a child we made Valentine boxes…
Losen: Yeah, I remember those boxes…everyone else’s was decorated better than mine was.
Victoria: I always enjoyed the Valentine’s we exchanged.
Losen: You must have had your box filled with cards. While everyone else gushed over their full box, mine was (more…)
Cochran Cornell Responds to the Bronx Zoo (N. Y.) Fundraiser
CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS
COCHRAN CORNELL RESPONDS TO
THE BRONX ZOO (N. Y.) FUNDRAISER
     “I don’t believe it!”
     Cochran Cornell the Cantankerous Cockroach irately jumped up and down on the brim of his creator’s hat, from where he’d been reading the Saturday newspaper. Before she turned the page to the article on the Madagascar hissing cockroach, he’d been rejoicing at the front page headline: ‘Egypt is free!’
     It was amazing how quickly his joy turned into rage.
     “How could they?” he shouted.
     Carolyn shifted her eyes toward the ceiling. “Calm down, calm down,” she told him.
     “Calm down? Do you see that picture? My ugly cousins are crawling all over that woman’s head, and she’s (more…)
ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER W
     Walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
     You may have heard the statement, He is so religious and spiritual that he is no earthly good.  In our minds there often is a divide between being a “spiritual” person and being someone who is a “productive member of society.”
     We walk by the Spirit, not as people separated from the world, but as people (more…)
My Mother’s Secret: An Adoption Story
CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS
MY MOTHER’S SECRET: An Adoption Story
I’m certain my mother would have strongly opposed SB335 as it progressed through the New Hampshire Senate and House in 2004. The Bill, which became law effective January 1, 2005, concerned access to records available to adult adoptees who were born and adopted in New Hampshire. These adoptees now can gain access to their own original, pre-adoption birth certificates…
 Why would she have opposed this law?
Because she had a secret.
Her secret was revealed to her family on January 19, 2011. (more…)
