THE LETTER  R

Monte Holland

Several persons have expressed an interest in having my husband, the Rev. Monte W. Holland, post an online series of devotions. Through their encouragement, Monte will post a weekly devotion on CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS. To read the introduction click on 26 Devotions Based on the Alphabet: Introduction. Click on 26 Devotions Based on the Alphabet: The Letter Q to read the previous post on the letter Q. Return to this site each Saturday to read his devotions.  Carolyn C. Holland

ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER R

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. (Romans 12:15)

Humans are social beings—they want to gather together. A prisoner’s harshest punishment is solitary confinement.

Under normal circumstances people desire to be with other persons. When they are isolated from other people they go “stir crazy,” feeling imprisoned or cooped up,. This is the experience of many persons in the northern climates during “stir crazy” January.

We need to get out. We need to converse with others. Even internet contact may be insufficient. We need face to face meetings, we need to touch another human.

Not only do we need to meet others, we need substantial interaction. Our scripture verse guides us—we need to celebrate the good things with persons around us, and we need to grieve with others when the need arises. We have weddings—social gatherings celebrating the beginning of a life-long commitment. We have funerals, where we share in the memory of a life that has come to an end and we grieve the separation that is final.

More and more obituaries state that there will be no viewing or no funeral service, situations I never heard of in my younger days. Why is it that many people deny survivors the last opportunity to do some celebrating of life and some grieving of loss of life? Has this verse lost its meaning? I don’t think so. We are still people who need people.

How appropriate this verse as one of twenty-six that are central to faith experience. We often claim the Great Commandment—loving God, others, and ourselves – as central to our faith. Love begins to probe the depths of our lives when we choose to rejoice and weep with those around us.
