ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER Q

Quench not the Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

New Year’s Day is here! We have this day to look forward to a whole year ahead. The last year has passed into history. The new slate is temporarily clean. Our “spirits” should be alive with anticipation, hoping for the best, that the “happy new year” greetings take on substance.

I can’t think of a better day to meditate on the verse, “Quench not the Spirit.” Quench not the capital s “Spirit,” God’s Spirit, which is continually with us, prompting us in our living. Paul wrote to the church at Rome: The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. (Romans 8:16) I need to be reminded that I am a child of God, and that I carry responsibility to live my best for God. Each day I try to listen to the Spirit prompting me.

Today is a special day in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team is playing the Washington Capitals in the outdoor Winter Classic at Heinz Field. The leader and the face of the Pittsburgh Penguins is their 23 year-old captain, Sidney Crosby. He is one of the best, if not the best, hockey player in the world. He also is an excellent ambassador for Pittsburgh and hockey, always bringing a genuine, caring demeanor to every interview. He gives the impression that he is the kid next door, even though he earns many millions of dollars each year. Still, he continues to work, improving his skills as a hockey player, and he is better this year than in years past.

If we take our scripture verse to heart, we will continue to work to improve (to live more faithful lives). It all begins with loving God, trusting God, listening to God’s Spirit within us, and letting that Spirit lead us. Quench not the Spirit.

There is so much ahead for each of us. Whatever our situation in life, the Spirit prompts us to improve our relationship with God, and to do many acts of love for our fellow human beings.

Choose this day to stay close to God and to live out the Great Commandment with the help of the Holy Spirit.
