ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER D

THE LETTER D

Monte Holland

Several persons have expressed an interest in having my husband, the Rev. Monte W. Holland, post an online series of devotions. Through their encouragement, Monte will post a weekly devotion on CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS. To read the introduction click on 26 Devotions Based on the Alphabet: Introduction. Click on 26 Devotions Based on the Alphabet: The Letter C to read the previous post on the letter C.

Return to this site each Saturday to read his devotions.  Carolyn C. Holland

ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER D

D—Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. (James 4:8a)

In a sense this verse continues the theme of last week’s devotion—giving attention to our vertical relationship, our relationship with God.

Some people cannot stand being alone. Almost immediately after one relationship fails, they are out building a new one to replace it. This verse ought to be natural for them. They are draw near people.

On the other hand there are people that similar to me. I can spend hours alone with my work and be perfectly content. I’ve been doing some renovation in the basement of a little rental house in Greensburg. If I am doing quiet work without loud sawing or hammering for a period of time, the tenant will come down to see if I am still alive. I can go virtually all day without much human contact. People like me may need our D verse a little more than other people do. We are not draw near people. We need to be reminded that God wants to be near us, but the ball is in our court. We initiate by drawing close to God.

No matter who we are, or what our personality is, God awaits our approach. The great thing is that God is ready for anyone to draw near. Rich or poor, Black or White. Free or imprisoned, young or old, male or female, etc.—God is anxious for us to draw near.

This verse reminds us that in reality we all need relationship. In a world that often sets up barriers to relationship based on any number of criteria, God is there—barrier free. God may have expectations of us—faith and obedience—but God’s door is always open. Not only is it open, but God invites us in to fullness of life that we can find in no other place.
