Today’s photograph features Lamoine Baptist Church, East Lamoine, Maine. This photograph was taken in 1940. The structure now houses the Lamoine Historical Society. The current Lamoine Baptist Church is a short ways down Lamoine Beach Road, towards Ellsworth, Maine.  To view click on:

Beatitudes – Ninth (or is it an extension of the eighth?)

Matthew 5:11-12

11 Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

In some ways this ninth beatitude is an extension of the eighth beatitude, the difference being that the blessing is a little different or an extension of the previous blessing. The blessing is a future reward in heaven due to the accumulation of reproach and persecution the Godly, moral person experiences in life. In a way this last beatitude sums it all up: what we do as followers of Christ, as servants of God, all culminates in an eternal blessing. It ends up with something that we really have no way of understanding—an eternity in the presence of God. We are not equipped to understand a place described in the following Bible verses:

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)  4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

John 14:2-3 (KJV)  2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Summary:    action or condition                                  blessing

Reproached and persecuted         great reward in heaven

Exercise: Describe in your own words what the great reward in heaven might be (there is no correct answer, at least that we know).
