Laughter Heals Dry Bones

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

LAUGHTER HEALS DRY BONES

Proverbs 17:22   A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.  Ezekial 37:4  Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. (KJV)

Joan sat at our dinner table, her head bowed so low her hair fell into her food and her nose would need to be washed if she leaned forward any closer.

She was our guest while undergoing three months of intense abuse counseling. As a victim of incest by her father and others, her spirit had become so dry, so buried, she couldn’t raise (more…)

The second specific source of help leading to a Godly and moral life:

2. Words from the Apostle Paul in his letters regarding the Christian life:

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:4-9 NRSV)

In Philippians the Apostle Paul challenges us to adopt special practices that are both part of the Godly lifestyle and (more…)

NEW www.wordpress.com FEATURES

I’m a reluctant computer learner. I’m one of those people that mechanical and electronics equipment take joy in when they see me coming: they become clownlike in their efforts to foil me by not working or breaking down

It takes me forever to try new things on the computer. When I am exploring new things, words I never thought I knew exit from my mouth. As you can guess, my (more…)

Where do we find help along the way to the Godly, moral life?

a.     Psalm 121:1-2 gives general guidance:

1I look to the hills! Where will I find help?

2It will come from the LORD, who created the heavens and the earth.

      b.    There are specific sources of help. The first we will examine is:

1. The Old Testament Law as stated in Joshua 1:

Be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you;—you shall meditate on it day and night—Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7-9)

In these verses, and others not printed here, the Lord God instructed Joshua about leading the Israelites across the Jordan River. Moses had already received the Law from God on Mt. Sinai in the form of the Ten Commandments. Moses had been the Israelite’s leader for forty years. All that time Moses was preparing to take them across the river to the Promised Land. Moses was not fully obedient to God and God denied him that privilege. Moses was a strong leader who was not fully up to the challenge. But we should not be deterred from meditating on the Law.

“Meditating on the Law day and night” may sound like a real drag, and it is often difficult to “be strong and courageous”– a directive that shows up twice in the Scripture passage. Yet is there any better way to go if we choose the Godly, moral life?

Aren’t these times that call for (more…)

I Lost My Son on a Greyhound Bus

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

I LOST MY SON ON A GREYHOUND BUS

Part 1

In 1974 my husband, Monte, was employed in his first career: a university professor teaching physics. That summer he attended a six-week workshop in Berkeley, California.

I planned on traveling to Berkeley with our two young children, Sandy, four and Nolan, two and a half.

Actually, it was supposed to be a vacation for Monte and I. The plan was to let the children stay with our friends, Wayne and Shirl Murray. Our two families had adopted each other as family, and the children often stayed with them. However, Sandy and Nolan missed Monte, his being away so long, so we decided I should bring them with me to California. A cross-country Greyhound bus trip would be an adventure. Little did I know how much of an adventure it would be!

Shirl drove us from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, to (more…)

     Lent Begins Tomorrow

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter). The word “Lent” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.”

The Lenten season is a time to prepare for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period for fasting and preparation for baptism by converts. It then became a time for penance by all Christians. Because Sundays are always “little Easters,” the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with (more…)

Jordan, 12, stayed at my house one during the week of the “snowmageddon” (as President Bush labeled the storms). I assigned her the task of researching St. Valentine’s Day to earn time on the computer. Below is what she discovered.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th by many people throughout the world.  St.  Valentine’s Day is a day for people to show affection and confectionary.

The romance of this celebration began with the (more…)
