Getting Started: The Example of Christ

The Apostle Paul has written one of the most influential statements about Jesus Christ in Philippians 2:

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:3-8)

Is it really possible to be like Jesus?

Jesus was the Son of God. We aren’t perfect like Jesus was. On the other hand, Jesus is a perfect example who we can emulate. I am thankful to have such a good teacher and example.

Thank God every day for the Great Teacher and say a loud “Amen!”

Exercises for February 22

  1. It sounds like Jesus wants us to think of the needs of others before our needs. When have you done that? Did it make you feel good?
  2. How do parents feel when their children try to live like this? Do they tell them that they are doing well?
  3. How do you think God feels when you (a child of God) do well?
  4. Do people use some of these words to describe your family as a whole (caring for others, giving, humble, interested in others)? Which ones?
  5. Is there a word in these verses that doesn’t describe you and your family? Would you like to change that?
  6. This is George Washington’s birthday. You remember the famous story about the cherry tree. How do you think George’s parents felt about his truthfulness?
