Jordan, 12, stayed at my house one during the week of the “snowmageddon” (as President Bush labeled the storms). I assigned her the task of researching St. Valentine’s Day to earn time on the computer. Below is what she discovered.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th by many people throughout the world. St. Valentine’s Day is a day for people to show affection and confectionary.
The romance of this celebration began with the legend of St. Valentine in 270 A.D.
St. Valentine was a holy priest who happened to be arrested and imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and for aiding Christians. In 496 A.D the pope marked Feb 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom.
The legend of St. Valentine is a tale of truth and love. Its purpose should inspire everyone in this new time of religious persecution. We celebrate Valentine’s Day because until 1969 it was one of the many Saints Days. It was dedicated to the Patron Saint of romantic causes.
In English speaking countries it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love. They will send chocolates, flowers, cards, and offering confectionary.
