Lizzy Borden took an ax,
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,

I’m sure this childhood rhyme is familiar to you. The difference between us is that you weren’t talking about someone who shares your ancestry. Lizzie and I share common roots: both of us descend from Rebecca and Thomas Cornell, albeit our lines separated prior to 1700 (I only discovered this paternal thread of connection in January 2003!).

BUSY—I’M SO BUSY!!! Lent Devotion #28

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11:29 “Take My (Jesus’) yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

REFLECTION: Remember the Sabbath? Or are you too busy to note its passing, something easy to do while living in a culture that prizes a business model?

The almost universal greeting, ‘I am so busy,’ is said with no small degree of pride, as if our exhaustion were a trophy and our ability to withstand stress a mark of real character. The busier we are, (more…)
