IT WAS A STICKY MESS ON LAUREL MOUNTAIN,

LIGONIER TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA

Mountain closed for 24 hours

Furnace Run, a stream that passes the back of my Laurel Mountain Borough community, may have offered a little sweeter water to nature’s critters that quench their thirst there.

The cause of the sweetness was “cherry lime rickey,” a cherry syrup that covered the highway, flowing into the stream that parallels the road, Rt. 30 a. k. a. the Lincoln Highway.

A big rig transporting the syrup to a company in Latrobe overturned near Laurel Mountain’s sharp curve known as the Mountain Inn Curve. The big rig was traveling downhill when the early evening wreck happened.

I took the following picture while caught in the traffic jam in Laughlintown:

Scuttlebutt has it that the driver survived, but no further information was publicized. He was transported to the hospital by helicopter. While sitting on our patio we saw the medical and news helicopters.
