Leap Year Day: Dealing With Life & Death Issues

LEAP YEAR DAY: DEALING WITH LIFE & DEATH ISSUES

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

6:55 a. m. My husband Monte calls to me just as I emerge from my night’s rest.

     It’s Leap Year Day. We are going to the State University of New York Upstate Medical University Hospital, to see Monte’s older brother, Paul (not his real name), who is hospitalized for a broken hip caused by a fall. Paul celebrated his ninetieth birthday in May, 2010.

     Just for the record, Paul lives in upstate New York near the St. Lawrence River. Monte and I live southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We are staying at the James Street EconoLodge Motel in Syracuse, New York, where we registered early Saturday evening.

     During our time at the hospital, I keep notes on who the doctors/nurses are, what they tell us, and how Paul is doing.

7:40 a. m. I choose a sesame-seed/poppy-seed bagel from the hotel’s continental breakfast, and wonder Will I be taking a drug test any time soon?* We need to be at the hospital, so I take the bagel with me.

8:10 a. m. We line up at University Hospital to get our daily visitor ID sticker. We must present our driver’s license from which a photo ID sticker is made. It lists the floor, room number, and the name of the patient being visited.

8:24 a. m. I’m in Paul’s room. He rests, I take out my bagel, which, slabbed with peanut butter and cream cheese, is pretty messy. I struggle to cut it into pieces with a plastic knife.

     Monte is elsewhere, trying to contact the physical therapist who treated Paul last summer. He hopes she will help him in his struggle with a decision: Should Paul should be subjected to post-surgical physical therapy by having surgery to repair his broken hip? It’s a fifty-fifty decision that Paul might not be able to help make. He is out of it much of the time, due to the injury and the medications. Monte’s limited medical power of attorney puts him in the position of making this decision if Paul is incompetent to do so.

     Post-surgery hip physical therapy is pretty rugged. Monte is concerned about hooking Paul into this therapy if he isn’t a good candidate.

8:27 a. m. Monte returns to wait for a call back from the physical therapist. I start to drink my coffee and take my cardiac meds.

8:30 a. m. Monte receives a call from the physical therapy agency director—-she saw Paul once. He asks about Paul’s attitude and willingness to work with physical therapy in comparison to the average patient.

     The agency director said she saw a very good, willing, physical therapy participant. She noted that without surgery the prospects aren’t good for Paul. She shared that her father was ninety-two when he had hip surgery and the outcome was good. She considers Paul to be a pretty reasonable physical therapy candidate, and if he were her father she would allow the surgery. If he is a walker it’s logical to try it.

     Monte discusses the situation with me. I take notes. Monte has considered Paul’s lifestyle. Paul likes to walk and be out of the house. Without surgery he will be unable to walk, he will be confined (more…)

A PIG ACTIVIST’S PLEA

Whatever you humans do today, March 1, 2012, DO NOT eat at Cici’s Pizza. Instead, initiate a boycott against the restaurant.

Why? Because Cici’s not only offers pork toppings on its pizza—a singular crime worthy of boycott—but its current special is HOG PIZZA.

March 1 is NATIONAL PIG DAY.

 If you must dine at Cici’s order their other special: chicken wings. Even though they charge extra for this delicacy, keep in mind that it will not only reduce Cici’s assault on our ilk—it will reduce the number of our food competitors.

Remember, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you order HOG PIZZA!

ABOUT NATIONAL PIG DAY

     Today is a landmark day, a day set aside to celebrate our ilk, a day to begin a whole new dietary regimen for humans.

     Today is the fortieth National Pig Day.

     On this anniversary I’d like to honor the two sisters, Mary Lynne Rave (North Carolina) and Ellen Stanley (Texas), who initiated National Pig Day in 1972*.

     Rave wanted to accord to (us) pigs (our) rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as (more…)

Hungarian Carnival Festival in Ligonier, PA.: 2012

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

 HUNGARIAN CARNIVAL

IN LIGONER, PENNSYLVANIA: 2012

     Because I scheduled attending the Ligonier Valley Theater’s production of Cooking with Gus (thinking it started at 2:00 p. m. when it was scheduled to start at 2:30 p. m., and it opened late) I was delayed arriving at the Hungarian Carnival, which began at 4:00 p. m. I missed the ending of the play and the beginning of the carnival.

    The play was quite humorous, having a ‘heaping helping’ of  comedy, as promised in the publicity. It focuses on Gussie Richardson, an entertaining cookbook author played by Anne Cruzan; her long-time beau Walter, portrayed by Jim Mikula; a slick agent named Bernie, played by Bernie Sherry, and an outrageous gypsy neighbor, Carmen, played by Sue Brick. I regretted missing the ending, which my friends told me continued the comedy, but I did see the scene where Cruzan artfully played the drunk cook. Kudos to the Ligonier Valley Players for yet another well-done production.

     When I arrived at the Hungarian Carnival my husband Monte and my friend Lois were already seated. I quickly snapped a photo of Monte…

…and ran over to where Old Man Winter was laid out—on the floor—for his funeral. The central activity of the Hungarian festival is burying Old Man Winter to make way for (more…)

Western PA. Conference (of the) United Methodist (Church) Ministers’ Chorus

 CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE

(of the) UNITED METHODIST (CHURCH)

MINISTERS’ CHORUS CONCERT

     Last Thursday evening my husband Monte and I traveled to the First United Methodist Church in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where the Western Pennsylvania Conference United Methodist Ministers’ Chorus presented a sacred concert.

TRIVIA ABOUT SINGING PASTORS

     Before continuing, I must tell you that the most interesting thing I learned during the evening was exposed when the pastors, thirteen men and nine women, introduced themselves. Here is a piece of United Methodist Church minister’s trivia:

BRUSSELS SPROUTS

MEAN A LOT

TO THESE CHOIR MEMBERS!

     Those persons who attended the concert to hear the wonderful music learned how much the singers like this vegetable.

      The tale began when one member introduced the subject. After announcing his name and church, he expressed his gratitude for the evening meal prepared by the church. He then announced that he was especially “thankful I had Brussels sprouts for dinner, and I found a great recipe for jell-o salad.

     This pastor started the Brussels sprout rolling. Several other singing pastors confessed that they, too, liked the veggie that was included on the dinner menu.

     When I grew up my father called them (more…)

Practice Your Smile for ‘Share a Smile Day’

CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS

PRACTICE YOUR SMILE FOR SHARE A SMILE DAY

Are you practicing your smile to prepare for Share a Smile Day, March 1?

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
She (Karissa Kunco, 21 ) was the most positive person. She was the perfect example of what a daughter should be…Her smile just made everything better.*
She (Dawnielle Victor, 12) made everything fun…She was always smiling.**
~~~~~~~~~~~~

     The legacy both these young women left for their loved ones was their smiles, which were constant, sincere, and made things better.

     That’s what smiles do. They improve life. They make things better.

     To some extent, we all know how to spot a genuine smile, basically (with) this formula:  Genuine Smile =Crinkly Eyes*3

     The crinkly eyes provide the insightful clue to the genuineness of a smile. The lack of crinkly eyes (or too much botox) is indicative of (more…)
