ALPHABET OF THE BIBLE – THE LETTER I
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
No matter how far back in time our telescopes may survey, there is one time totally beyond reach—the beginning. That was the time when only the Creator (our Trinitarian God) was present. The whole of Creation awaited its appearance.
The Word was present—Jesus Christ. And so, too, the Holy Spirit existed. Basic to our faith is the belief that the Triune God was in existence before all of Creation. There is no theology of the creation of the Creator. That is beyond the scope of any human analysis.
Why is such a verse part of this 26 verse set? Very simply, it affirms that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinctly pre-eminent to all of the created order. It reminds us that what Jesus said and did matters above all else to the Christian. It reminds us that promptings from the Holy Spirit should not be casually cast aside.
Many people expend far too much energy to “protect” God from the onslaught of Darwin’s research and the theory of evolution. They mistakenly believe that to accept Darwin’s scholarship is, in some way, siding with atheism.
The Biblical truth here makes it clear that we, in this created order, were not there at the “beginning” and that we owe all that we are and all that we have to the Creator.
Darwin’s work has withstood intense scrutiny for over a century. It has come through with flying colors. But its descriptions only deal with the period since Creation. Science in general has no ability to speak of our God. It attempts to describe the workings of our world—but only this side of Creation. We do many marvelous things because of discoveries made by scientists and engineers. But their area of expertise is limited.
We remember this verse to remind us of one basic fact: Creation belongs to God alone.
Do we seek for the highest things? Study the teachings of Jesus and patiently listen for the promptings of the Holy Spirit. They are part of the full truth that precedes Creation.
