Monte Holland
Several persons have expressed an interest in having my husband, the Rev. Monte W. Holland, post an online series of devotions. Through their encouragement, Monte will post a weekly devotion on CAROLYN’S COMPOSITIONS. Below is his introduction. Return to this site each Saturday to read his devotions. Carolyn C. Holland

A FRAYED LIST OF TWENTY-SIX ALPHABET BIBLE VERSES
About 1980 I lived in the small community of Hallston, Pennsylvania, a few miles southeast of Slippery Rock. Hallston has only a few residents. Its landmarks are a railroad crossing located near a former coal tipple and a small country church with a cemetery—St. John’s United Methodist Church. When Carolyn and I moved into that community in 1977, our family attended that church. After all, I am a United Methodist, it was within walking distance of our home, and many local people worshipped there.
We were moving into the midst of a number of people who lived out their faith in this country setting. Bill Allen, a retired carpenter and member of the church, spent a lot of time with me in 1976 and 1977, advising me as I built a garage, and continuing to advise me as I built our family home (with some hired help). Merle Staiger, a Sunday school teacher, invited me to accompany him when he occasionally visited church shut-ins. It was his Sunday school class that encouraged me to apply to participate in a mission work team trip to Haiti in January 1980.
One particular person was Bill Sollinger, an electrician by trade who worked for years on the nuclear power plant construction at Shippingport. Although he lived in Butler. St. John’s was his church through the years, and he was a regular at church and Sunday school.
One Sunday he opened his Bible and showed me a compact list on a piece of paper stuck in the back of it—an alphabet of Bible verses that gave a capsule view of our faith. I always treasured that list. From time to time I refresh my memory of the verses.
I was reminded of that list on August 31, when the key verse in the Upper Room devotional reading was Galatians 6:2. This is letter B from Bill’s list: Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill then law of Christ.
Bill has gone on ahead, but I still have his list. Next Saturday I will begin a twenty-six week devotional series on this set of alphabet verses. Perhaps you will find these verses valuable enough to save and commit to memory.
